World leaders urge Trump against moving embassy to Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, December 5, 2017 (WAFA) – A number of world leaders Tuesday urged US President Donald Trump not to change the status quo in Jerusalem by moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem and warning of the impact of such a step on stability in the region.

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern in a telephone conversation with Trump regarding such a move, stressing that the status of Jerusalem should be resolved through negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel.

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi also stressed in a telephone call he received from Trump to brief him on his decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem the importance of preserving the legal status of Jerusalem as stated in international references and resolutions, urging not to complicate the matter in the region through measures that could undermine chances of peace.

King Mohammed VI of Morocco also wrote Trump a letter warning of the repercussions of such a move and stressing the importance of the holy city not only to the parties of the conflict, but to the three monotheistic religions.

He said the region is facing enough wars and conflicts and does not need to have another one that would inflame feelings and increase extremism and terrorism.
