RAMALLAH, November 2, 2017 (WAFA) - Palestinian campaign condemning the infamous Balfour Declaration on its centennial anniversary hit the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Thursday.
Al-Quds reported the centennial anniversary of the Balfour Declaration “crime” has inflamed the Palestinian people’s anger and strengthened their commitment to their rights.
Al-Ayyam printed in bold a title that read: “The centennial anniversary of the declaration has fanned the flames of Palestinian anger and prompted them to demand that Britain bears its historic liability for the declaration.”
Al-Hayat al-Jadida printed a bold headline in white letters against a black background that read: “The Balfour Declaration is void.”
It printed a caricature, originally published in the website Arabi 21, slamming UK Prime Minister Theresa May over her comments expressing pride in Britain’s part in creation Israel.
May is shown driving a bulldozer and leveling Palestinian rights to the ground. The bulldozer’s blade takes the form of a copy of the Balfour Declaration.
The dailies reported President Mahmoud Abbas reiterating his demand that the British government formally apologizes for the declaration and rectify its historic mistake through the immediate recognition of the Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida printed an article by President Abbas titled “Britain must atone for the Balfour Declaration – and 100 years of suffering.” The op ed appeared in English in the British newspaper, the Guardian.
Organization of Islamic Cooperation was reported in al-Ayyam reiterating its support for the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people.
Al-Quds said Israeli forces cracked down on rallies protesting the Balfour Declaration in the West Bank cities of Bethlehem and Tubas.
Furthermore, al-Quds reported a number of Palestinians were injured during clashes that erupted as a result of Israeli troops’ raids into East Jerusalem neighborhood of Shufat, Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem and Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus.
It added Israeli troops detained 21 Palestinians during multiple predawn raids across the West Bank and seized an area of 150 dunums belonging to the Palestinian village of Deir Nidham, northwest of Ramallah.
The dailies reported the national consensus government has resumed control over three main crossings as part of the reconciliation agreement with Hamas in the besieged Gaza Strip.
They reported Minister of Public Works Mufeed Hasayneh, who attended the handover ceremony at Rafah border crossing, announcing all illegal taxes and fees would no longer be imposed on goods entering Gaza and travelers.
Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported Palestinian rescue teams stopped searching for five Palestinians who went missing following the Israeli attack at tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip.
They added the body of Muhammad Musa, who was killed by Israeli forces while he was driving along a road near Ramallah-district village of Nabi Saleh, would undergo an autopsy today.
Al-Ayyam spotlighted an apologetic street party organized by English graffiti artist Banksy at his hotel in Bethlehem to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration.
