Newspapers Review: Killing of Palestinian near Ramallah focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, November 1, 2017 (WAFA) – The killing of a Palestinian by Israeli forces near Nabi Saleh village, northwest of Ramallah, dominated the front page headlines in the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Wednesday.

The dailies reported Israeli forces opened fire at two Palestinian siblings while they were driving along a road near Nabi Saleh village, killing the driver and injuring his sister.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam described the killing of the driver as “assassination”.

The victims were identified as Muhammad Musa, 26, and his sister, Latifa, 33, from Salfit-district village of Deir Ballout. 

Al-Quds added in this regard Muhammad was left to bleed to death at the scene before being taken to an Israeli hospital.

The dailies also reported thousands of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of seven Palestinians who were killed after Israeli forces blew up an underground tunnel in the southern Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added rescue teams continued to search for missing persons following the explosion.

Al-Ayyam said Egyptian and Palestinian officials made intensive contacts for the purpose of preventing any potential escalation between Israel and Gaza.

Member of Fatah Central Committee Azzam al-Ahmad was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating Fatah and Hamas would proceed with their steps towards reconciliation and that they would not be deterred by the Israeli aggression from achieving that goal.

The dailies reported the National Consensus Government was slated to take full responsibility for Gaza’s border crossings starting from November 1.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam added an Egyptian delegation was slated to arrive in the besieged Gaza enclave to oversee this event.

Head of the Civil Affairs Authority Hussein al-Sheikh was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida announcing starting from November 1 the Rafah crossing would function normally the way it used prior to June 4, 2007.

European Union (EU) media representative in the occupied Palestinian territories Shadi Othman was reported in al-Ayyam announcing the EU mission to Rafah crossing was ready for deployment.

The dailies also reported Israeli occupation authorities have established a special police unit for East Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Furthermore, al-Quds spotlighted Palestinian official campaign to commemorate the centennial anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration on November 2.

Al-Ayyam added UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson defending the Balfour Declaration and expressing his “pride in Britain’s part in creating Israel.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida spotlighted an advertising campaign by the Palestinian Diplomatic Representative Office to the UK to raise awareness of the effects of the declaration on the Palestinian people.

It explained the anti-Balfour advertising campaign run on black cabs driving round London’s streets.

It also reported Chilean government announcing that they plan not to participate in the centennial celebrations of the Balfour Declaration in the UK.

It also highlighted an official letter from British parliamentarians and civil society figures urging the British government to immediately recognize the Palestinian state.
