Newspapers review: Construction of new East Jerusalem settlement focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, October 27, 2017 (WAFA) – Israeli occupation authorities’ plan to construct a new settlement on Qalandia area, north of East Jerusalem, dominated the front page headlines in Palestinian Arabic dailies on Friday.

Al-Quds reported Israel has allocated millions of shekels to advance a plan to construct a new settlement on Qlandia Airport, known by its Israeli name Atarot Airport.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard Israeli occupation authorities have started the construction works for a new settlement consisting of 10,000 settler units on Qalandia area.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida added Israeli occupation authorities have approved the construction of 700 new settler units in two East Jerusalem-district settlements.

Moreover, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said protected by police, scores of Israeli Jewish settlers stormed East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

They added Israeli forces demolished a Palestinian home in Khirbat Yanun village, southeast of Nablus.

They also reported Israeli forces delivered demolition orders for two other homes in East Jerusalem neighborhood of Jabal Mukaber and Jenin-district town of Qabatia.

Al-Quds also reported crews of the so-called Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem conducted “excavations” at the Muslim cemetery of Maman Allah in East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam revealed the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem has made new deals to sell church landmark assets in Jerusalem to Israeli investors.

Furthermore, al-Quds highlighted Palestinian official steps decrying UK Prime Minister Theresa May’s comments indicating that her country would celebrate “with pride” its role in the creation of Israel and the upcoming centennial anniversary of the infamous Balfour Declaration.

Al-Quds reported Foreign Minister Riad al-Malki stating in this regard Palestine would confront UK’s impenitence, filing lawsuits against it in British and European courts.

The dailies said head of the Environment Quality Authority Adalah Attireh and head of the Land Authority Saeb Nathif returned to Ramallah after they were prevented from assuming their tasks by Hamas counterpart officials in the besieged Gaza Strip.

The European Union (EU) Media Representative in the occupied Palestinian territories Shadi Othman said the EU considers 2005 agreement a reference to open Rafah crossing border.

Concerning the financial crisis gripping Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem, al-Quds said Health Minister Jawad Awwad discussed the conditions of East Jerusalem hospitals with Director of al-Makassed Hospital Rafiq al-Husseini.

The Finance and Planning Ministry was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida pledging to ensure that Jerusalem institutions, including hospitals, would continue to operate.

Al-Ayyam reported US Vice President Mike Pence was set to visit the Middle East (Israel, the occupied Palestinian territories and Egypt) in December 2017.

It added proponents of the two-state solution have cautioned against the consequences of Israel’s so-called “Greater Jerusalem Bill”, which would see the inclusion of 19 illegal Israeli settlements under to the Israel’s municipal jurisdiction for Jerusalem.

It also reported Israeli forces detained 10 Palestinians, mostly in overnight raids across the West Bank. According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, detainees totaled nine.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Israeli Jewish settlers attacked Palestinian farmers who were harvesting olives in Nablus-district village of Deir al-Hatab.

They said the United Nations was set to blacklist 190 Israeli and international companies doing business in the occupied Palestinian territories.

They also reported Israel has buried a survey on archeological findings in the ethnically-cleansed Palestinian village of Lifta near Jerusalem.
