Newspapers Review: PLO Executive Committee meeting focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, October 17, 2017 (WAFA) – The meeting of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s (PLO) Executive Committee in Ramallah dominated the front page headlines in the Palestinian Arabic dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported the Executive Committee affirmed its support to the outcomes of the meeting between Fatah and Hamas delegations in Cairo.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added the Committee stressed the importance of empowering the national consensus government to assume its responsibilities in the besieged Gaza Strip.

It also reported the Committee stressing the importance of unifying the Palestinian political system and maintaining independent national decisions.

It added the Committee has called on international donors to increase financial support provided to the National Consensus Government in order to end the intra-Palestinian division.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida also spotlighted Fatah Central Committee’s meeting in Ramallah.

Al-Quds said Fatah Central Committee was determined to restore Palestinian national unity and make the Cairo-based Hamas-Fatah dialogue successful.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard the committee called for demonstrations outside British embassies everywhere to protest the British government’s intention to hold celebrations marking 100 years for the infamous Balfour Declaration.

Furthermore, the dailies reported Israeli occupation authorities approved the construction of a new settlement consisting of 31 units in the heart of the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

Al-Ayyam added Israeli occupation authorities were anticipated to approve more settlement construction plans on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Highlighting Israeli forces’ assaults against unarmed Palestinian civilians, al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces demolished three Palestinian homes in Jabal al-Baba community, to the east of Jerusalem.

The dailies added Israeli forces seized three dunums of Palestinian land, located to the east of Bethlehem city.

Al-Ayyam reported Israeli forces raided Qalandia refugee camp, south of Ramallah, injuring dozens Palestinians with rubber-coated steel bullets and causing others to suffocate.

It added Israeli forces injured two Palestinians with rubber-coated steel bullets and detained two others during a raid into Azzoun village, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqiliya.

It also reported Israeli forces injured a number of Palestinian school children with rubber-coated steel bullets and caused others to suffocate from tear gas during a raid into East Jerusalem neighborhood of al-Issawiyeh.

According to al-Hayat al-Jadida, Israeli troops detained 13 Palestinians in multiple predawn raids across the West Bank.

The dailies reported Israeli Jewish settlers stole the olive harvest from Palestinian farmers in the Ramallah-district village of al-Janiya and Nablus-district village of al-Sawiyeh.

The director-general of the Palestinian Crossings and Borders Authority Nazmi Muhanna’s visit to Gaza in order to assume his duties in terms of managing Gaza border crossings also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.

Muhanna was reported in al-Quds stating the Crossings and Borders Authority has assumed responsibility for the movement of persons and collection of fees at Rafah border crossing with Egypt.

The dailies added Muhanna toured Rafah crossing and Karam Abu Salem cargo crossing with Israel and that a Ministry off Education’s delegation was anticipated to arrive to Gaza on Wednesday.

Muhanna was also reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida stating he has come to Gaza upon President Mahmoud Abbas’ instructions in order to implement the first agreed upon item of the Cairo-based reconciliation agreement.

Al-Quds said Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah discussed intra-Palestinian reconciliation and political developments in separate meetings with United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay Mladenov and United State special envoy Jason Greenblatt in Ramallah.
