Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight factions’ reconciliation efforts

RAMALLAH, October 9, 2017 (WAFA) – The Egyptian-brokered reconciliation talks between Fatah and Hamas political factions set to be held in Cairo on Tuesday hit front page headlines in the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published on Monday in Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Al-Quds reported Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has instructed Egyptian officials to continue efforts to secure Palestinian unity.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam describing Egyptian efforts intended to end the intra-Palestinian division as the beginning of a stage that paves the way to reach a just peace.

Al-Ayyam reported in this regard both Fatah and Hamas have confirmed their seriousness to achieve reconciliation and keenness to make their meetings, set to be held in Cairo on Tuesday, successful.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Fatah Revolutionary Council has stressed the importance of restoring unity and making the Cairo-based Fatah-Hamas talks successful.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was set next week to approve the construction of 3,829 new settler units in the West Bank.

The dailies said Israeli artillery pounded a location in the besieged Gaza Strip after a rocket was fired from the coastal enclave toward Israel.

Al-Ayyam also reported hundreds of Israeli Jewish settlers forced their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, where some of them performed rituals.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli occupation authorities shut down Hebron’s Ibrahimi Mosque and Jerusalem’s Old City in order to make way for Jewish celebrations on the occasion of Sukkot holiday.

Al-Ayyam added Israeli forces detained 16 Palestinians in multiple predawn raids across the West Bank.

It reported Hamas official Husam Badran stating Hamas and Fatah would not open the 2011 Cairo reconciliation agreement for discussion during their talks on Tuesday, but would discuss the mechanisms of implementing the agreement.

US President Donald Trump was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida claiming he wanted to give peace between Israel and Palestine a “shot” before following through his election campaign promise of moving the US embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
