Newspapers Review: Dailies highlight Israeli repression as paper says US proposes autonomy

RAMALLAH, September 9, 2017 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies highlighted in their Saturday issue Israeli repressive measures against the occupied Palestinian people in East Jerusalem and the West Bank, with Al-Quds highlighting the US proposing full autonomy to the Palestinians instead of the two-state solution.

Al-Quds said quoting “informed” sources in Washington that the US is preparing to propose to the Palestinians what is said was “full autonomy” in the occupied territories, which it said was an adoption of the position of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

It said the paper will be soon presented to the Palestinians and Israelis, which sums up what the US peace team has come up in more than 20 meetings with both sides in the region and abroad.

At the same time, the three dailies reported on the Israeli repression against the Palestinians highlighting assault on Palestinians and solidarity members who were protesting outside the Shamasneh residence in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah, which was taken over by Israeli settlers last week.

They also reported on the orders to demolish 12 Palestinian homes in Jett village in the Qalqilya area in the occupied West Bank under the pretext they were built without permit, as well as settlers uprooting and destroying 43 fully grown olive trees in the village of al-Sawiyeh near Nablus as the olive season approaches.

They said the Israeli occupation forces turned over on Friday night corpses of two Palestinians – Raed Salhi, 21, from Dheisheh refugee camp in Bethlehem, and Qutaybeh Zahran, 17, from the village of Allar in Tulkarm area – for burial by their families. Both bodies were held by Israel.

Salhi was critically injured during an Israeli army raid of Dheisheh camp a month ago and died in an Israeli hospital last week, while Zahran was shot and killed three weeks ago after allegedly attempting to attack Israeli soldiers.

In other news, al-Quds quoted Hamas member Nasser Eddin al-Shaer denying that his organization is planning to form a new political party in the West Bank, describing these reports as unfounded.

It also said Hamas leader in Gaza, Ghazi Hamad, has criticized in a blog the movement’s performance calling on it to reconsider its policies.

Al-Ayyam said the Islamic Jihad has called on Hamas to disband its administrative committee that runs Gaza affairs.

The paper also said Israeli police attacked a guard at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem and a group of Turkish tourists after one of the tourists raised a Palestinian flag to take a picture with it in the Muslim holy compound. It said the police pepper sprayed the guard and tourist.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on a mural for the Virgin Mary painted by a British artist displayed on the segregation wall Israel had built around Bethlehem.
