RAMALLAH, April 12, 2017 (WAFA) – The government’s statements regarding its decision to slash the salaries of the civil servants in Gaza were highlighted in local Palestinian dailies on Wednesday.
The dailies reported Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah stating the cut in the salaries of the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) civil servants in Gaza is a temporary measure.
He was also reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam stating the cuts would be reimbursed once the budget allows that and when Hamas accepts President Mahmoud Abbas’ initiative.
Highlighting tensions at flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, al-Quds said Israeli police raided the facilities, storehouses and clinic in the Muslim holy place and prevented worshippers from staying inside the compound.
The dailies reported armed clashes were controlled in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ain al-Hilweh in Lebanon.
Al-Ayyam added in this regard Palestinian factions, who met in the southern Lebanese city of Sidon in an effort to end the clashes, are determined to disband the hardline Islamist militant group that has barricaded itself in the camp once and for all.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said Israeli forces raided the Hebron district town of Beit Ummar sparking clashes and causing a number of Palestinians to suffocate from tear gas.
The dailies said a large number of Palestinians participated in the funeral procession of 17-year-old Jassem Nakhleh, a day after he succumbed to his wounds sustained when he was shot and critically injured by Israeli forces on March 23.
The dailies spotlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ official two-day visit to the Bahraini capital, Manama.
He was reported in al-Ayyam announcing Palestine seeks to obtain full membership in the United Nations.
He was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as stressing the need that Arabs adopt the same message in relation to the Palestinian question.
Al-Ayyam published a report announcing that over 1,500 Palestinians in Israeli jails have completed preparations for the mass hunger strike planned to start on April 17, the Palestinian Prisoner Day.
In addition, it published Central Election Commission’s statistics on the preliminary register of electoral lists and candidates.
It reported in this regard that independent lists not affiliated to any political party constitute 58.4 per cent of the total number of lists.
It added candidates under 45 years of age constitute 58 per cent of the total number of candidates.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported member of Fatah’s Central Committee Jamal Muheisin stating that a delegation representing the ruling Fatah party is set to travel to the besieged Gaza Strip during April to hold talks with Hamas.
