Newspapers review: Killing Israeli soldier in alleged car-ramming attack focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, April 7, 2017 (WAFA) – The killing of an Israeli soldier in an alleged car-ramming attack in the central West Bank district of Ramallah hit the front page headlines in local Palestinian dailies.

The dailies said an Israeli soldier was killed and another was injured in an alleged car-ramming attack near Silwad village, northeast of Ramallah.

They added Israeli forces detained the Palestinian driver, identified as Malik Hamed, 23, from Silwad village and raided his hometown.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Hamed’s mother denying Israeli claims that her son rammed his car into the soldiers.

Furthermore, al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian public prosecution have penalized owning and selling of Israeli SIM cards, considering them illegal cards bought and sold in violation of Palestinian law.

The dailies reported Hamas’ Interior Ministry executed three Palestinians charged with collaborating with Israel.

They added the Palestinian government, factions and human rights organizations denounced the executions.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said three Palestinian families received evacuation orders due to the fractures and cracks caused by Israeli tunnels in the Wadi Hilweh area of the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Russian Foreign Ministry reaffirming its support for the two-state solution and expressing concerns over the stalling of the Middle East peace process.

It added the Minister of Health Jawad Awwad ordered a series of measures and took a number of decisions following the death of a number of patients and accusations of malpractice in Beit Jala Government Hospital.

It reported hundreds of Palestinian Authority (PA) civil servants protested at the Unknown Soldier’s Square in Gaza City, demanding the PA reverse its decision to deduct at least 30 percent of their salaries.

It said the Society of St. Ives has nullified a decision to demolish a newly-renovated Palestinian home in East Jerusalem.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to visit Bahrain on next Monday.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported President’s Advisor for Foreign Affairs and International Relations Nabil Shaath announcing Abbas is looking forward to conduct an “in-depth dialogue” with US President Donald Trump.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Palestinian Christians hope for an “open Jerusalem” for Easter (the feast of Resurrection).

Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces detained 21 Palestinians during multiple predawn raids across the West Bank, while al-Hayat al-Jadida said a total of 27 Palestinians were detained.

It added Israeli bulldozers leveled newly-reclaimed Palestinian lands to the south of Bethlehem.
