RAMALLAH, March 26, 2017 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ winning of the Steiger Award in Germany hit the front page headlines of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Sunday.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Abbas was awarded the prestigious Steiger’s Hope for Peace Award during his current visit to Germany. Abbas said in his acceptance speech that the conflict with Israel is not against Judaism but against the occupation which controls Palestinians and their land.
On a different subject, al-Quds, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the centrality of the Palestinian issue will be under the spotlight in the Arab Summit, which will take place in Amman, Jordan on March 29.
The three dailies reported that thousands of Palestinians in Gaza participated in the funeral of senior Hamas official Mazen Fuqaha, who was assassinated outside his home in Gaza on Friday.
Al-Quds said that a number of Palestinians were injured on Saturday during clashes that broke out with Israeli occupation forces in the town of Beit Ummar, north of Hebron in the occupied West Bank.
A statement by UN envoy Nicolay Mladnenov was published in al-Hayat al-Jadida. He said that Israel is ignoring UN Security Council resolution which called for a halt on construction of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said the UN Commission on the Status of Women approved on Saturday a draft resolution regarding Palestinian women status under the Israeli occupation. The resolution, titled “situation of and assistance to Palestinian women” was voted on by 30 countries.
