Newspaper Review: Turkish Coup Attempt Thwarted

RAMALLAH, July 17, 2016 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on the thwarting of the attempted military coup in Turkey, which was led by a group of colonels in the Turkish army.

Al-Quds wrote in its main news story that Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan vowed to crack down on those colonels who attempted to carry out a coup against him and the elected government.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the attempted military coup in Turkey faced a “quick” end.

Al-Ayyam said 265 people were killed and 1,440 others injured in clashes which followed the attempted military coup in Turkey.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad al-Maliki phone called his Turkish counterpart and congratulated him on the defeat of the “coup seekers”.

Al-Quds said the United Nations Security Council failed to issue a draft resolution that condemns the attempted military coup in Turkey, as Egypt opposed the resolution.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli authorities allowed for the first time automobile importers to import 150 cars to Gaza via Erez border crossing on the Gaza-Israel border.
