RAMALLAH, September 21, 2015 (WAFA) – The detention of 40
Palestinians over the last two days by Israeli forces together with Israeli
cabinet’s decision to allow the use of sniper rifles against Palestinians
throwing stones during demonstrations in Jerusalem hit the front page headlines
in Palestinian dailies.
Al-Quds covered the detention of 40 Palestinians and latest
demolition of Palestinian properties in its main front page news article.
It reported that Israeli forces detained 39 Palestinians over the
last two days as well as assaulted others after breaking into and ransacking
their houses across Jerusalem.
It also reported as part of its main front page news article that
Israeli authorities demolished six Palestinian-owned commercial structures in
the Jerusalem’s town of Hezma, without any prior notice. It said that Israeli
forces also closed the main entrances of Jerusalem’s towns of al-‘Issawiya and
al-Ram. The demolition and closure were also covered in al-Hayat al-Jadida.
Furthermore, al-Quds reported as part of its main front page news
article that Israeli settlers opened fire on a Palestinian vehicle near Beit
Dajan to the east of Nablus. The Palestinian was not injured.
It also reported that Israeli forces conducted detention raids in
Jenin city and refugee camp as well as in the Ramallah village of Nabi Saleh. It
said that forces violently quelled a peaceful march against the construction of
the wall in Beit Jala.
It further reported that several Palestinians suffocated and others
were injured during clashes with Israeli forces at the entrance of the Hebron’s
town of Sa‘ir.
On the other hand, al-Ayyam opted to highlight ongoing settlers’
intrusion into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and the detention of 40 Palestinians as
its main front page news article.
It reported that protected by Israeli occupation forces, a total of
150 settlers forced their way into the mosque compound and that a total of 40
Palestinians were detained by Israeli forces across the West Bank.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida opted to cover Israeli cabinet’s decision to
allow Israeli forces to use sniper fire against Palestinian stone-throwers during
demonstrations in Jerusalem.
It reported in this regard that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu has pushed through changing the Israeli forces’ open-fire regulations
and that the Israeli Municipality of Jerusalem has been “Hebraizing” the names
of streets across Jerusalem.
Al-Ayyam reported on Israeli human rights organization, B’Tselem,
as warning in this regard that the additional Israeli measures against
Palestinian stone-throwers would have “grave consequences”.
Furthermore, al-Quds reported Yesh Atid leader Yair Lapid as warning
that if a demilitarized Palestinian state is not established, the new Mayor of
Jerusalem would be a Palestinian.
It also reported that in an attempt to forestall the demolition of
Amona, an Israeli settlement outpost built on privately-owned Palestinian land
near Ramallah, Israeli settlers plan to announce that the land the outpost is
established on are absentees’ property that belongs to the state of Israel.
Furthermore, the three dailies reported that President Mahmoud
Abbas starts Monday an official visit to Paris.
Moreover, al-Ayyam reported that Brazil’s President Dilma Rousseff
opposes the appointment of a former settlement leader, Dani Dayan, as Israel’s next
ambassador to Brazil.
According to a report in Yediot Aharonot, Brazilian President Dilma
Rousseff passed on quiet messages to Jerusalem that she was unhappy with the
appointment, and that the country was concerned that it would be interpreted as
Brazilian support for Israel’s settlement policies.
Finally, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that several
Palestinian security officers, including high-ranking officers, would face
disciplinary action following their involvement in an attack against a teenage boy for partaking in a peaceful
rally in the Bethlehem refugee camp of ‘Azza in support of Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Ayyam explained that some
high-ranking officers were placed into provisional retirement and other lower
ranking officers were sent to disciplinary jail.
