RAMALLAH, September 14, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli prison authorities have
been denying a Palestinian detainee, who was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the
liver prior to his detention, of medical
treatment, Monday said the Palestine Prisoner’s Club (PPC).
PPC, in a press statement, warned about the deteriorating health
condition of Rabi‘ Jibril, an administrative detainee from the Bethlehem
village of Tuqu‘ who suffers from liver cirrhosis and cardiac dysrhythmia;
abnormal heart rhythm.
PPC noted that Jibril was detained by Israeli forces on August 20. He was sentenced to four months in administrative
detention without charge or trial. Under administrative detention, prisoners
are held without charge or trial and for an indefinite and renewable period of
time.
PPC also noted that despite warnings by medical professionals that
his health condition is critical, Jibril continues to be denied medications he
used to take prior to his detention.
PPC added that Jibril has lost his consciousness three times since
his arrest, and has never been admitted into a hospital for medical checkup and
treatment.
According to human rights groups, medical negligence has been a
systematic policy in Israeli jails.
most prisoners are often prescribed painkillers without any
thorough medical follow-up
There are some 1500 sick prisoners in Israeli jails, of whom 80
prisoners are suffering from serious health problems and do not receive the
necessary treatment; they suffer from malignant diseases, paralysis, and
disabilities, in addition to cases of mental illness and neurological disorder.
According to a B’Tselem annual
report issued in 2013, “53 prisoners died inside Israeli prisons dueto
medical negligence. In addition, several cases were documented in which
prisoners died after their release, with medical reports indicating that their
deaths resulted from medical negligence.”
