Prisoner in Israeli Jail Denied Medical Treatment

RAMALLAH, September 8, 2015 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Prisoner’s Club (PPC) reported that a Palestinian prisoner, incarcerated in Israeli jails, is in need of medical treatment in light of his serious health condition.

PPC lawyer, following a visit to 20-year-old prisoner Ibrahim Adel As-Sha’ir in the Israeli jail of Eishel, affirmed that As-sha’ir suffers from a lower jaw swelling, which obstructs his ability to eat, drink, or even talk.

The lawyer noted that the Israeli prison service transferred As-Sha’ir to Israel’s Soroka Medical Center over a month ago, but he was not provided with the necessary medical treatment.

As-Sha’ir was detained on July 9, 2014, as he attempted to leave the Gaza Strip via the Israeli-controlled Beit Hanoun – Erez border crossing, north of Gaza. As-Sha;ir was heading to the West Bank for medical treatment.

According to human rights groups, medical negligence has been a systematic policy in Israeli jails.

There are some 1500 sick prisoners in Israeli jails, of whom 80 prisoners are suffering from serious health problems and do not receive the necessary treatment; they suffer from malignant diseases, paralysis, and disabilities, in addition to cases of mental illness and neurological disorder.

The group reports the “lack of natural sunlight and moisture in the prisons, along with a poor, imbalanced diet and restrictions on use of the prison yard for exercise, can lead to health problems such as skin diseases, extreme fatigue, anemia and weakness, kidney problems, rheumatism, dental problems and ulcers.”

As-Sha’ir is scheduled to attend a court hearing on the 10th of September, 2015.
