RAMALLAH, August 20, 2015 (WAFA) – The Israeli High Court’s
decision to suspend the detention-without-trial or charge of hunger-striking
detainee Mohammad ‘Allan hit the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic
dailies.
The dailies reported that the Israeli High Court has decided to
suspend the detention order of ‘Allan following a 65-day-long hunger strike.
Al-Quds quoted Head of the Committee
for Detainees and Ex-detainees Affairs Issa Qaraqe‘ as hailing this suspension
as “a national and legendary victory” and “a step toward ending ]Israeli[arbitrary measures” against
Palestinian detainees.
The three dailies reported that Israeli forces
demolished a building under construction in Jerusalem’s neighborhood of Wadi
al-Jouz and an agricultural structure in Ramallah’s village, Beit Our.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida also published that
Israeli forces served a demolition notice for an apartment belonging to a
Palestinian detainee, who is accused of stabbing and killing an Israeli settler
in November 201, in Hebron.
Moreover, the three dailies highlighted confrontations between
Palestinian and international activists as well as Christian families and
clergymen and Israeli forces at the site where Issraeli forces uprooted over 50
Roman-era olive trees in Beit Jala.
Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported in this regard that Israeli forces
physically assaulted protestors who demonstrated against leveling Palestinian
land at the site to facilitate the construction of the Israeli apartheid wall.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard that Palestinian and
international activists as well as priests protested against the construction
of the apartheid wall in Beit Jala.
It is worth noting in this regard that the ancient olive trees were
uprooted to facilitate the building of the separation barrier through Beit Jala
land, which will separate 58 Christian families from their land and connect the
illegal Israeli settlements of Har Gilo and Gilo. The Cremisan Valley is an
important source of livelihood for local farmers as well as being home to two
Salesian monasteries and a convent school.
Besides, the three dailies reported that the UN warned Israel
against enacting laws that would exacerbate the human rights situation in the
occupied Palestinian Territories.
Al-Quds reported on PLO Executive Committee members as denying
reports that Presient Mahmoud Abbas and other six PLO Executive Committee
members intend to resign.
Following reports that the Palestinian National Council (PNC) - the
PLO’s legislative body- would convene during September, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat
al-Jadida quoted Fatah Central Committee member ‘Azzam al-Ahmad as stating that
no committee has been formed in preparation for the PNC’s meeting and that it
would be the prerogative of the PLO’s Executive Committee to take the decision
to form such a committee.
Furthermore, al-Quds reported that Abbas has issued a decree
abolishing the Peace Coalition Center, chaired by sacked PLO’s Executive
Committee member Yasser Abed Rabbu.
Al-Ayyam reported US
presidential contender Mike Huckabee as saying during a visit to Jerusalem on
Wednesday that he did not consider the West Bank occupied by Israel.
Furthermore, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadiida reported that nine
Palestinian refugees died after an overloaded boat carrying illegal
migrants fleeing the Syrian conflict capsized off Turkey.
The UN Agency
for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) was reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat
al-Jadida as announcing that the 1015/16 UNRWA school year would start as
scheduled without any delay.
The agency was
also reported as confirming that Typhoid has broken out among
Palestinian refugees from the besieged Yarmuk camp in the Syrian capital
Damascus.
