RAMALLAH,
August 3, 2015 (WAFA) – Remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during his
meeting with a delegation from the Israeli Meretz party headed by Zehava Gal-on
about the latest string of Israeli settler terrorist arson attack that burned
alive Palestinian toddler and left his family members critically injured in the
Nablus village of Duma hit the front page headlines in the three Arabic
Palestinian dailies.
Covering
Abbas’ remarks in its main front page news item, al-Ayyam quoted Abbas as
stating: “Israeli occupation and settlement expansion are behind the
crimes perpetrated by the settlers.” He was also quoted as stating: “We could
not tolerate or remain silent towards this terrorism.”
Abbas
was quoted in both al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida as also stating in this
regard: “As a result of its obstinacy to proceed with settlement construction,
Israeli occupation is the reason for this criminality against the Palestinian
people.”
He was
also quoted in al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating: “If such serious events persist,
we will take a different position.”
On her
part, Gal-on was quoted in al-Hayat al-Jadida as stating that “firm/ resolute
actions” should be taken against “Jewish terrorism” and that the “Israeli
occupation of millions of people should be brought to an end.”
In
contrast, al-Quds opted to highlight ongoing Israeli forces and settlers’
attacks against Palestinian people across the occupied Palestinian Territories
(oPT).
It
reported that settlers continued their assaults against Palestinians across the
West Bank and clashes broke out between Palestinians and Israeli police across
East Jerusalem towns and neighborhoods.
It
also reported that Israeli police continued to detain Palestinians and an
elderly Palestinian was shot and injured by Israeli forces in the northern Gaza
Strip.
Reporting
on this issue, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that following a
Palestinian march to the Nablus village of Duma in protest and condemnation of
the arson attack that burned toddler Ali Dawabshe to death, clashes erupted
between Israeli forces and protestors.
They
also reported that Palestinians attempted to confront and prevent new attempts
by settler groups to force their way into Al-Aqsa Mosque compound and that
Israeli police clashed with Palestinians in the Mosque and later detained five
Palestinians.
Both
newspapers printed a photo showing Palestinian protestors holding photographs
of the 18-month-old toddler as Israeli police block a road leading to the
Mosque.
On the
other hand, al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted in its main front page news item
that the file submitted by the Palestinian leadership on settlers’ terrorist
attacks, particularly the arson attack the claimed ‘Ali Dawabsheh’s life, would
be received today by the UN Human Rights Council.
Furthermore,
al-Quds reported that the Israeli authorities opened a coffee shop over the 12th century
Ma’man Allah cemetery, also known as Mamilla, and that the Israeli West
Jerusalem Municipality has hailed this as one of its most important
achievements.
Al-Ayyam
reported that attempting to confront the increasing pressures it is subject to,
Israel vows not to ‘tolerate’ Jewish terrorists.
Covering
this issue in particular, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that while the government
of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ‘promised’ not to ‘tolerate’
Jewish extremists, it in reality funds their terrorism.
It
also reported that while Israeli ‘Defense’ Minister Moshe Yaalon authorized the
use of administrative detention for against Jewish settlers for perpetrating the
latest arson attack, Israeli security forces failed to find them.
