JERUSALEM,
July 20, 2015 (WAFA) – Israeli authorities Monday arrested at least five
Palestinians during predawn raids in Jerusalem and Hebron, according to
witnesses and local sources.
In Jerusalem,
Israeli police stormed Ras al-Amoud neighborhood before dawn and arrested 17-year-old
Sulaiman Qaraeen, after raiding his family’s home; he was taken to a nearby
interrogation center.
Earlier Sunday,
Israeli police arrested three Palestinians in the same area after raiding their
homes. The three were identified as Ahmad Ghoul, 17, Fathi Nasser, 18, and Nour
Zaghal.
Meanwhile,
police stormed a house in the Mount of Olives neighborhood and sabotaged its
furniture, before notifying the family to turn in their son, Osama Barham, to
the police. The police did not give a reason for the family.
To the south
in Hebron, a number of Palestinians suffocated from teargas fired by Israeli
soldiers during clashes in the town of Beit Ummar.
The army
earlier set a checkpoint at the entrance of the town, where they arrested
28-year-old Salah Alami, a local baker, and forced him to accompany the army
force to a nearby detention center in his own car.
The soldiers
also notified another Palestinian to appear for interrogation at the nearby illegal
settlement bloc of Gush Etzion’s military compound.
According to
the World Bank, the combination of checkpoints, the separation barrier through
the West Bank, and other closures – all of which greatly limit the movement of
workers and goods – has caused the Palestinian people to suffer “one of the
worst recessions in modern history,” with approximately 50% of the Palestinian
population now living in poverty.
