RAMALLAH, May 13, 2015 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks
indicating that ending the Israeli occupation is a prerequisite for peace
together with the findings of the latest census of Palestinians conducted by
the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) just three days before the
Nakba is commemorated, are the two items that hit the front page headlines in
Palestinian dailies.
Speaking during a press conference with his Tunisian counterpart Beji Caid Essebsi in Tunis, President
Mahmoud Abbas was quoted in the three dailies as stating: “It would be
impossible to achieve peace unless the Israeli occupation is ended.” This news
item in particular featured as the main front page items in al-Hayat al-Jadida.
The three dailies also reported the PCBS as saying the results of
the latest census reveal that the Palestinian population worldwide has totaled
12.1 million, increasing nine-fold.
Covering latest Israeli settlers and forces’ practices across the
West Bank, al-Quds reported in its main front page item that Israeli settlers
continued to force their way into the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound.
It also reported that Israeli forces demolished a structure in the
Ramallah town of Silwad and handed demolition notices for two residential tents
in Khirbet Susiya in the southern Hebron hills.
The dailies highlighted Palestinian rallies and events
commemorating the 67th anniversary of the Nakba, the Palestinian
forced exodus following the establishment of the State of Israel and
depopulation of 400 Palestinian towns and villages.
Al-Ayyam reported that Palestinian refugees commemorated the
anniversary of the Nakba on the armistice line running through their original
village of Al-Walaja, which was depopulated in 1948.
Palestinian cabinet was reported in al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida
as calling on Palestinians across the West Bank and Gaza Strip to take part in
the commemoration of the 67th anniversary of the Nakba.
The cabinet was quoted in al-Quds as stating: “The Palestinian
people are more determined to consolidate the foundations and pillars of the
future Palestinian state.”
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported an Israeli military
major general as saying: “Israel and Hamas have common interests,” and the
continued rule by Hamas is necessary and in the interest of Israel.
