RAMALLAH, June 4, 2014 (WAFA) – President
Mahmoud Abbas handed an official letter to the Head of the Central Elections
Commission, Hanna Nasser, calling upon the Commission to start taking procedure
for holding the presidential and legislative elections after six months
following the date of issuing the letter.
Following is the official authorization letter
by President Abbas:
“Dear Dr. Hanna Nasser,
Head of the Central Elections Commission
(CEC),
Greetings,
Considering implementation of the agreement
reached between the [Palestinian] national parties, and in accordance with the
reconciliation agreement which was concluded with the formation of the 17th government
(government of national consensus), and since presidential and legislative
elections are a fixed political, constitutional obligation representing the
people’s will in electing their legal representatives, and considering the fulfillment
of the Palestinian people’ top interests, we seek of you to start immediate action
to take all necessary procedures to enable the CEC to be fully prepared for
holding the presidential and legislative elections after six months as of the
date of writing this letter.
We hope that you coordinate and cooperate with
the government, which will utilize its utmost potential to help prepare for
general, free, transparent elections satisfying the aspirations of the
Palestinian people in choosing their representatives.
