DEBRECEN, Hungary, September 27, 2026 (WAFA) – In a show of solidarity with and sympathy for the Palestinian people and their just cause, players of the Republic of Ireland national team wore black armbands during their match against the team of the Israel in Matchday 2 of the UEFA Nations League.
The Irish players also bowed their heads as the anthem of the occupying state, Israel, was played during the match held in Hungary, which sparked widespread controversy ahead of kick-off due to the continued Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.
Ireland took a commanding 3-0 lead in the first half, with all three goals scored before the 30-minute mark.
There had been divisions among Ireland’s players over whether to play the match, with goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu withdrawing from the squad and deciding not to play in the two matches, with the return fixture scheduled for a week later.
The match has sparked widespread controversy since the draw placed the two teams in Group B3 of League B of the UEFA Nations League, with numerous initiatives and campaigns calling on Ireland’s players to withdraw from the fixture in solidarity with Palestine over the ongoing war between Israel and Gaza.
Pressure on the Irish national team has continued to mount, as Palestinians have received widespread support for calls to boycott the two matches.
Ireland midfielder Jason Knight said following his team’s 1-0 defeat to Kosovo that the players were facing a difficult situation, adding that he saw no reason for the two matches to be played.
More than 160 Irish athletes have signed an open letter urging the country’s football association to reconsider its decision and not proceed with the two matches.
The association fears that the national team could face severe sanctions from UEFA, particularly as Ireland is co-hosting UEFA Euro 2028 alongside England, Wales and Scotland.
Ireland officially recognized the State of Palestine in May 2024, alongside Spain and Norway.
According to the Football Association of Ireland, the players and the association intend to make charitable donations, including part of the match bonuses and proceeds from one of the team’s upcoming matches.
