Turkey asks Interpol to issue red notices for Netanyahu, former Israeli intelligence officer

ANKARA, August 21, 2026 (WAFA) — Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gürlek said on Friday that Türkiye has asked the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol) to issue red notices for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli intelligence officer Afek Moskovitch over an ongoing judicial case concerning an Israeli attack on activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza.

In a statement posted on the Turkish social media platform NSosyal, Gürlek said proceedings were ongoing before the Istanbul 11th High Criminal Court against 35 defendants over the incident, which took place in international waters. Netanyahu and Moskovitch are among those named in the case.

He said arrest warrants were issued for Netanyahu and Moskovitch on July 14, 2026, on charges including genocide. Following the warrants, the Turkish Justice Ministry asked the Interior Ministry to seek Interpol red notices for the two suspects, adding that the relevant documents had also been forwarded to the Foreign Ministry.

Gürlek said the two defendants are being prosecuted over alleged acts involving “armed intervention against civilians providing humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters and the detention of activists.”

The charges include crimes against humanity, genocide, aggravated deprivation of liberty, intentional injury, torture, aggravated theft, damage to property and hijacking of means of transportation.

“We will not allow crimes committed in Gaza to be covered up or those responsible to be protected by a shield of impunity,” Gürlek said, pledging that Türkiye would use all means available under national and international law.

A red notice is an Interpol request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate a person wanted for prosecution or to serve a sentence and to seek their provisional arrest pending extradition or other legal proceedings. A red notice itself is not an international arrest warrant and does not compel every country to arrest the person.
