Palestinian Journalists Syndicate condemns Israeli campaign questioning slain Gaza journalists' professional status

RAMALLAH, July 2, 2026 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Journalists Syndicate on Thursday condemned a systematic campaign by Israeli entities to question the professional status of Palestinian journalists killed during Israel's ongoing military aggression on the Gaza Strip, saying the allegations seek to justify their killings and evade legal and moral responsibility.

In a statement, the syndicate said the claims are part of a broader campaign targeting both the truth and those who report it, accusing Israel of attempting to discredit Palestinian journalists after failing to conceal violations from the international community despite repeated attacks on journalists and media institutions.

The syndicate stressed that the journalists killed during the offensive were engaged in documented journalistic work, either as employees of local, Arab, and international media organizations or as independent journalists. It said they were targeted while carrying out their professional duty of reporting events and documenting alleged violations against Palestinians.

The organization called on Arab and international media and human rights organizations to coordinate with the syndicate and respect its decisions regarding the recognition of journalists killed during the Israeli war.

The syndicate further said that international humanitarian law and relevant international conventions guarantee protection for journalists as civilians during armed conflicts. It warned that attempts to link a journalist's professional status to alleged political affiliations, personal views, or ideological backgrounds set a dangerous precedent that could be used to legitimize attacks on journalists and justify their killing.
