GAZA, October 10, 2025 (WAFA) – Thousands of displaced Palestinians began returning to Gaza City on Friday, as the ceasefire agreement officially came into effect following its approval by the Israeli government.
Local sources reported that crowds of people started walking back to their homes early Friday morning via the coastal Rashid Street and the Salah al-Din Street, the two main north-south arteries of the Gaza Strip.
Many of the displaced are traveling at least seven kilometers on foot, carrying what little belongings they have, after being forced to flee their homes due to repeated Israeli attacks.
The Rashid coastal road, which stretches from the northern to the southern ends of the Strip, witnessed numerous massacres during the war, especially as Palestinians attempted to flee south under Israeli displacement orders. Many were killed while moving along this very route.
The return of displaced families comes hours after the Israeli government gave final approval to a ceasefire deal proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, aimed at ending Israel's two-year war on Gaza. The deal marks the start of Phase One of a broader peace plan and includes a full halt to hostilities, withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, entry of humanitarian aid, and a prisoner and hostage exchange.
President Trump announced the agreement late Thursday, describing it as the beginning of a larger effort to achieve peace in the Middle East, rebuild Gaza, and advance a political solution in the region.
