UNRWA continues to provide lifesaving assistance in Gaza amid war, famine, and severe financial crisis

NEW YORK, October 6, 2025 (WAFA) - The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) said it continues to reach around 2 million Palestinians across the Gaza Strip, who are enduring war and famine, with lifesaving assistance and basic services.

This information was included in a report issued by UNRWA on its work in the occupied Palestinian Territory since January 2025, covering all data from January to September 2025.

The UN agency said in its report that, “UNRWA remains the largest primary healthcare provider amid famine in Gaza City and inhumane conditions across the Strip.“

The report added: “Over 1,000 UNRWA health staff keep six clinics and 20 medical points running. Since January 2025, 2.7 million medical consultations have been provided - that's 13,000 every day. More than 127,000 children have been screened for malnutrition; 9,000 received lifesaving therapeutic food. Meanwhile, over 213,000 children received polio vaccines at UNRWA clinics, more than 35 per cent of all children reached during the campaign.”

It noted that in early September 2025, over 94,000 displaced people were estimated to be living in some 60 shelters managed by UNRWA.

UNRWA quoted a displaced UNRWA colleague as saying, “We are working under catastrophic conditions. We do everything we can to provide services to people in dire need.”

UNRWA continues to provide these services despite the severe financial crisis it is facing, warning repeatedly of its consequences amid the extreme deterioration of the humanitarian situation for refugees in the Gaza Strip.

The report further stated: “The Government of Israel’s ban on UNRWA bringing humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip started in March 2025. Until then, UNRWA had reached over 2 million people with food aid. UNRWA has enough food in warehouses in Jordan and Egypt to supply the entire population for three months. In addition, UNRWA has shelter supplies outside of Gaza that can fill up to 2,000 trucks (enough to reach up to 1.3 million people).”
