Lebanese soldier killed, another injured by Israeli gunfire in southern Lebanon

BEIRUT, January 26, 2025 (WAFA) – A Lebanese soldier was killed and another injured by Israeli gunfire on Sunday in southern Lebanon, the Lebanese Army reported.

In a statement on X, the Lebanese military confirmed that the two soldiers were targeted by Israeli forces. One soldier was killed on the Marwahin-Dhayra road in the Tyre region, while the other was injured in the village of Mays al-Jabal in the Marjayoun district.

The statement described the attack as part of the ongoing Israeli assaults on Lebanese citizens and military personnel in the southern border regions.

The attack comes amid continuing tensions along the Lebanese-Israeli border, where Israeli forces have been violating the ceasefire agreement. Despite the November 2024 truce brokered by the United Nations, which set a 60-day deadline for Israeli withdrawal from southern Lebanon, the Israeli military has continued to maintain a presence in some areas, in clear violation of the ceasefire terms.

Earlier today, the United Nations expressed concern over the lack of progress regarding the safe return of civilians to their villages along the Blue Line. The UN emphasized that the conditions for a safe return have not been met, despite the deadline for Israeli withdrawal passing at midnight.
