1.9 million homeless in Gaza as a result of Israeli aggression, UNRWA warns

NEW YORK, January 24, 2025 (WAFA) – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) has reported that 1.9 million people in the Gaza Strip are currently homeless.

The agency warned that reconstruction efforts could take years following the genocide committed by Israeli occupation forces between October 2023 and January 2025.

In a statement issued on Friday, UNRWA revealed that at least 1.9 million individuals have been displaced due to the war in Gaza, with many forced to seek refuge in temporary shelters, such as those in the Mawasi area in southwest Gaza.

The agency noted that the majority of homes in the region have been either completely destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. It emphasized that rebuilding infrastructure, restoring normal life, and addressing the psychological trauma of the affected population will require years of effort.

UNRWA also expressed deep concern about the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, particularly in the northern part of the strip.

"Once the ceasefire took effect, UNRWA teams worked tirelessly to begin distributing food aid in northern Gaza," the agency stated.

It stressed the urgent needs of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who remain amid the rubble left by months of intense Israeli bombardment, describing their situation as one requiring life-saving assistance.

UNRWA called for sustained support to maintain the delivery of humanitarian aid on this scale, stressing the importance of continued global efforts to address the ongoing crisis in Gaza.
