UN General Assembly adopts resolution supporting Palestinian right to self-determination and statehood

NEW YORK, November 15, 2024 (WAFA) – The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a resolution affirming the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, independence, and freedom from Israeli occupation. The resolution stresses that this right is inalienable, unconditional, and non-negotiable, rejecting any so-called "security measures" imposed by Israel as preconditions.

The resolution references the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice, which declared the Israeli occupation illegal and called for its immediate cessation. This stance, the resolution argues, is critical to allowing the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination and achieve statehood.

A total of 170 countries voted in favor of the resolution, including Canada, Australia, all EU member states, and the majority of nations from South America, Asia, and Africa. Only six countries voted against the resolution: Israel, the United States, Argentina, Paraguay, Micronesia, and Nauru.

The resolution was co-sponsored by 119 UN member states, representing a broad coalition of African, European, Asian, and Latin American countries, highlighting the widespread international support for Palestinian rights.

The timing of the resolution is particularly significant, as it comes amid ongoing Israeli atrocities against the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. The resolution rejects these actions as crimes against humanity and genocide, emphasizing the international community’s duty to uphold international law when addressing the Palestinian issue.

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN, Riyad Mansour, reaffirmed Palestine’s commitment to securing international support for the rights of its people. He emphasized that the Palestinian leadership will continue to press for accountability and justice for Israeli crimes, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the forced displacement of Palestinians.

Mansour also called for urgent international action to ensure a ceasefire in Gaza, the delivery of humanitarian aid, and its effective distribution to prevent further suffering of Palestinian civilians, particularly in the northern Gaza Strip, who are currently being subjected to genocide, starvation, killing, and destruction.
