President of European Council calls for a ceasefire in Gaza, respecting international law

BRUSSELS, Wednesday, August 28, 2024 (WAFA) - President of the European Council, Charles Michel, called for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and for respecting international law.

In a statement issued today, the President of the European Council said: "We support the introduction of basic food and sanitary supplies to the Gaza Strip, as international humanitarian law must be respected everywhere", noting that the occupation of the West Bank is illegal.

He confirmed that the Council supports the efforts of the United Nations to bring aid and vaccines into the Gaza Strip.

He said that the Council seeks to coordinate efforts with the countries of the region to achieve a ceasefire, noting that the situation in Gaza is catastrophic. "We are trying to avoid further escalation in the region.”

He stressed that EU leaders agree on the need for a ceasefire in Gaza.
