Newspaper Review:  2nd meeting of Palestinian Central Council focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, February 08, 2022 (WAFA) – News about the second meeting of the Palestinian Central Council, which kick-started on Sunday its 31st session at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah, hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said the Palestinian Central Council, the second-highest decision-making body in the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), elected Rawhi Fattouh as speaker of the National Council, the highest decision-making body in the PLO, replacing the veteran Salim Zanoun, who resigned today after serving as speaker since 1993.

The papers also reported that the Central Council filled three vacant posts for the 16-seat Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).

As reported in the dailies, President Mahmoud Abbas mourned the death of Fatah Central Committee member Jamal Muheisen, who died in Ramallah at age 73. The President praised the late Fatah leader for his role in the Palestinian struggle for liberation and leadership role in the Palestinian revolution.

The papers said that the Israeli municipality of West Jerusalem notified owners of dozens of Palestinian commercial facilities in Wadi al-Joz neighborhood in occupied East Jerusalem of its intention to demolish their businesses,

They also added that Israeli settlers attempted torchying a Palestinian house in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron.

Israeli forces tore down a retaining wall and a livestock shed in the southern West Bank district of Bethlehem, as reported in the papers, which also added that clashes broke out between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian youths in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Kafr 'Aqab, in which nine Palestinians were injured.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Stanford University announced that Bassam Dally, a Palestinian-Australian academic, has been listed among the 2% of scientists worldwide.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that the Israeli Knesset approved of the first reading of the Palestinian families reunification ban bill.

The two papers said that Israel freezed plans to connect Jerusalem to the illegal Israeli settlement of Maale Adumim.

Al-Quds said that the Israeli municipality in Jerusalem approved of a $1 billion budget in order to connect the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied city of Jerusalem.

Minister of Health Mai Alkaila said that 7,931 new cases of COVID-19, 15 deaths and 8,010 recoveries were registered in Palestine during the last 24 hours, said the dailies.
