Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Plans to Attack Syria

RAMALLAH, August 28, 2013 (WAFA) – The Palestinian dailies, as the rest of the world, were heavily focused on Wednesday on plans by Western countries to attack Syria.

The headline in al-Quds said: “The West on the verge of a limited military operation in Syria in few days.”

The headline in al-Ayyam said: “The military attack on Syria is a matter of days to be followed by peace talks in Geneva.”

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said: “The world is holding its breath as the attack on Syria is imminent.”

Al-Quds printed a story by Reuters saying that the US strike on Syria aims at punishing President Hafez Assad and not to change the course of the fighting in Syria.

The three papers reported on Israeli preparation for a possible attack on Syria and printed pictures of American aircraft carriers floating in the Mediterranean.

Other subjects highlighted on the front page of the three dailies dealt with the meetings President Mahmoud Abbas held at his office on Tuesday with different officials, including the head of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Norway’s foreign minister.

The papers reports as well on the shooting in Askar refugee camp in Nablus between security forces and armed men and the killing as a result of an innocent bystander.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported on statements by Rafiq Natsheh, head of the anti-corruption authority, that it was able to get back $60 million corrupt businessmen had used of public money.

Al-Ayyam said in a report on the Israeli army killing of three Palestinians in Qalandia refugee camp, south of Ramallah, on Monday that the army has justified the killings.
