Newspapers Review: Egypt Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 27, 2013 (WAFA) – The millions who took to the streets of Egypt in response to the military’s call was the focus of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies on Saturday.

All three papers highlighted the protests in various Egyptian cities with the papers focusing on the pro- and counter-military protests. The papers also printed pictures of clashes, marches and a panoramic view as in al-Quds of the masses in Tahrir Square in Cairo.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted as well the Israeli measures restricting European Union activities in the occupied territories following an EU decision to start taking action against products from the illegal Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank.

Al-Quds reported on this story as well while focusing on reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has told US officials of his intention to build another 1000 units in the major West Bank settlements, which could torpedo efforts to resume Palestinian-Israeli negotiations.

The three papers also highlighted the tens of thousands who attended the third Friday of Ramadan prayers at al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem while also printing pictures of the estimated 300,000 Muslim worshippers who attended the noon prayer at the Mosque.

The papers reported on the possibility of the Israeli government announcing on Sunday a decision to release prisoners.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Chinese news agency saying Abbas told reporters in Ramallah that Sunday is going to carry good news regarding the prisoners.

Al-Quds reported on the weekly anti-settlements, anti-wall protests in the West Bank and the Israeli army crackdown on these protests.

Al-Ayyam reported on the murder of a woman and her two children in Salfit in the West Bank and said police has arrested the woman’s brother-in-law and charged him with triple murder.
