Activists Demolish Parts of Apartheid Wall East of Jerusalem

JERUSALEM, July 9, 2013 (WAFA) – A group of Palestinian activists Tuesday managed to demolish parts of the Apartheid Wall in the town of Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem, according to a press release issued by the Popular Resistance Committees.

As part of the “Shidi Helik Ya Balad” campaign, about 35 activists covering their faces with the Palestinian Kuffiyahs, carried big hammers and targeted the torched-up wall.

In less than 15 minutes, they managed to create two big holes.

According to local sources, clashes erupted between Israeli soldiers and the activists near the Wall, which separates the city of Jerusalem from the towns of Abu Dis and Bethany.

Israeli soldiers fired tear gas canisters to disperse the youth and are currently patrolling the area to face any unexpected confrontation.

This act comes only two months after activists managed to create another hole in the Apartheid Wall in the same town of Abu Dis.

The campaign coincided with the 9th anniversary of the issuing of an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice, which condemned Israel's construction of the Wall on July 9th, 2004.

The Advisory stated, “All states parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention relative to the Protection of Civilian Person in Time of War of 12 August 1949 have in addition the obligation, while respecting the United Nations Charter and international law, to ensure compliance by Israel with international humanitarian law as embodied in that convention.”
