RAMALLAH, March 2, 2013 (WAFA) – The protests that raged in several areas of the West Bank on Friday were the focus of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published Saturday.
The main headline in al-Hayat al-Jadida over a picture that went across the page of a Palestinian throwing a rock at Israeli soldiers from a close distance in one of the West Bank protests said: “Together as one man with the prisoners and against the settlements.”
Al-Ayyam headline, also published over two pictures of confrontations between soldiers and Palestinians in Kufr Qaddoum, near Qaqilya, and soldiers arresting a Palestinian in Hebron, said: “The West Bank up in flames… Dozens injured in the crackdown on prisoners’ solidarity marches.”
Al-Quds had the headline along a picture of Prime Minister Salam Fayyad suffering from the tear gas Israeli soldiers have fire at protesters in Bilin that said: “Two critically wounded with live ammunition in Qalandia and near Ofer; dozens injured in the crackdown on protests against the wall; journalists and ambulances targeted.”
Other headlines in the dailies tackled the Israeli marathon in Jerusalem and Palestinian response to it.
Al-Quds said: “Israeli police curb a Palestinian marathon held in response of the Israeli marathon.”
Al-Hayat al-Jadida: “Jerusalem up in arms against the Israeli marathon.”
Al-Ayyam: “The occupiers suppress a Palestinian marathon against the so-called Jerusalem marathon.”
Another headline in al-Ayyam touched on the battle of the southern East Jerusalem neighborhood of Beit Safafa against the construction of a major road that would cut through its land to connect illegal West Bank settlements with West Jerusalem. It said: Occupation bulldozers start today construction on a settlement road through Beit Safafa.”
Other headlines in al-Ayyam: “Israel postpones settlement projects until after the Obama visit;” “Israel blocks entry of deputy secretary general of the Islamic Jihad into Gaza;” “Man wounded in the head in Qalandia clashes transported to Hadassah Hospital;” “(Israel’s chief of staff Benny) Gantz rules out a third intifada;” “Fayyad from Bilin: Our people will not lose their way;” “Confrontations between youths and soldiers and fire opened at civilians in Beit Hanoun injuring four;” “Palestinian dies at Jericho prison and the attorney general calls for investigation;” and “Veteran journalist Radwan Abu Ayyash passes away.”
Several of al-Ayyam headlines were also found in Al-Hayat al-Jadida, which also said in the headlines: “Obama’s visit linked to formation of Israeli government;” “Abbas mourns Radwan Abu Ayyash;” “Gantz does not rule out attack on Gaza and violent clashes in West Bank;” “(Civil affairs minister) Hussein al-Sheikh: An international doctor will participate in the investigation into the death of Arafat Jaradat (who died in an Israeli jail);” “(EU’s) Ashton calls on Europe to mark settlement products;” and “Ethiopian Jewish women injected with medicine that prevents pregnancy.”
The headlines in al-Quds other than those that appeared in the two other dailies said: “Horrendous testimonies on who army and security service officials killed the two Abu Jame martyrs (who were beaten to death by soldiers after their capture on April 12, 1984 following the bus 300 incident);” and “(the Israeli) Yeroshalim weekly says the battle over Petra hotel (in Jerusalem’s Jaffa Gate) is ongoing.”
