Newspapers Review: Quartet Meeting Dominates Dailies

RAMALLAH, January 4, 2012 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies Wednesday focused on the results of the Quartet meeting with Israeli and Palestinian representatives in Jordan.

Al-Quds front page headline reported that the Palestinian delegation submitted proposals on security and borders to their Israeli counterparts, who took the proposals and promised to respond to them in future meetings.

The headline quoted Jordan’s Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh that the two sides held serious and constructive talks and have agreed to hold more meetings in the future, all will be held in Jordan.

The daily printed a picture of the meeting, featuring chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat with Israeli negotiator Yitzhak Molcho and representatives of the Quartet.

Al-Ayyam highlighted statements by President Mahmoud Abbas, commenting on the Quartet meeting before it was held saying that Palestinians are ready to resume negotiations when Israel recognizes the terms of reference of the peace process and halt all settlement activities.

The three dailies featured statements by a Palestinian official, who preferred to remain unknown, that the Quartet meeting “did not bring anything new,” and indicated that the Palestinian and Israeli sides agreed on a second meeting on Friday in the Jordanian capital Amman.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida was the only newspaper to highlight new Israeli tenders for the building of 312 housing units in East Jerusalem, intensive excavations in the East Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan, and seizure notices of 169 dunums of land in Salfit.

Al-Quds editorial stressed that Palestinians have never been and will never be an obstacle to peace, indicating that Palestinian unity and non-violent strategies are the only way to face the Israeli intransigence.
