Newspapers Review: Dailies Highlight Factions' Cairo Meetings

RAMALLAH, December 22, 2011 (WAFA) – The meetings of the Palestinian factions taking place in Cairo to discuss the reconciliation dominated the front page headlines of Thursday's issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

“Faction leaders agree on mechanism to implement national reconciliation agreement,” said the main headline in al-Quds.

“Cairo: Important meeting today for the PLO committee; Details of the agreement on the elections commission,” was the two-line headline in al-Ayyam.

“The President and Meshaal meet in Cairo on the eve of a meeting for the PLO provisional leadership body,” said the main headline on the front page of al-Hayat al-Jadida.

The ongoing attack by Israeli settlers on Palestinian farms and villages was the second main headline in the three papers, which highlighted the cutting down of olive trees near Hebron in the southern West Bank, as well as the destruction of land and greenhouses in the village of Kufr al-Dik, north of the West Bank.

Israeli threats to freeze Palestinian tax money if the Palestinian Authority proceeds with plans to join the World Trade Organization, the conflict between Israel and the four European countries that voiced concern over Israel’s settlement policy and the events in Syria and Egypt occupied sections of the front pages of the dailies.

The editorial in al-Quds focused on the condemnation of the Israeli settlement plan. It said that while verbal condemnation is important, it is not enough. It said the condemnation should be followed by actual action because condemnation is not going to bring settlements to a stop.
