Newspapers Review: Dailies Feature Naksa Day Events in Syria, West Bank, Jerusalem

RAMALLAH, June 6, 2011 (WAFA) – Events in Syria, the West Bank and Jerusalem on the 44th anniversary of the June 5, 1967 war, which Palestinians refer to as Naksa Day, were the main focus of all Monday’s Arabic dailies.

Al-Ayyam, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Quds’ headlines from the Golan Heights read: “23 dead, hundreds injured by Israeli army.” The papers covered Sunday’s protests by Palestinian refugees at the Syrian-Israeli border in commemoration of Naksa Day.

The stories also described injuries among Palestinian protesters at Qalandia, the checkpoint half way between Jerusalem and Ramallah, and in the Gaza Strip and in East Jerusalem.

A picture of Israeli soldiers pointing guns at protesters at the Syrian borders occupied more than half of Al-Hayat Al-Jadida’s front page.

Al-Quds’ front page story reported on Abbas’ official approval of the French peace initiative to Alain Juppe, the French foreign minister. Al-Hayat Al-Jadida featured the same story.

Al-Ayyam and Al-Quds reported on Egypt’s statement that Hamas was behind the partial obstruction of Palestinian movement from Gaza to Egypt through Rafah border crossing on Sunday.

The three dailies also featured news on the latest developments in Yemen, Syria and Libya.
