Newspapers Review: Arab Peace Initiative to Seek UN Recognition Main Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, May 29, 2011 (WAFA) – The Arab Peace Initiative Committee’s decision to seek United Nations recognition of a Palestinian state within 1967 borders next September was the main focus of Sunday’s issue of Al-Quds, Al-Ayyam and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida newspapers.

The three dailies printed pictures of the meeting and quoted Abbas in their headlines, reading in Al-Quds: “Netanyahu blew everything and there are no grounds for negotiations.”

Al-Ayyam front page story featured the opening of Rafah border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt as well as the movement of Palestinians in both directions. Both Al-Quds and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida reported on the same matter; all three stories accompanied with pictures of the crossing.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida and Al-Ayyam’s front pages both covered Azzam al-Ahmad’s announcement of an intensive consultations between Hamas and Fatah to form a government after Abbas’s return from Qatar. However, Al-Quds featured the same news in its second page.

The three dailies focused on the latest updates in Syria, Libya and Egypt.

Al-Hayat Al-Jadida was the only paper to cover Barcelona’s win in the Champions League final for the fourth time, printing a picture of the Champs players with the Cup.

Al-Ayyam’s editorial had the headline: “A Real Test for the International Community’s Credibility;” in which the paper commented on the Arab Peace Initiative Committee’s decision to seek UN recognition of a Palestinian state next September.
