Media Breathes Again in Gaza

GAZA/RAMALLAH, May 5, 2011 (WAFA)- Following more than four years of inner Palestinian division, the reconciliation agreement signed between the political parties this week provided media crews in Gaza with a new space, free of censorship, boycott, and broadcast blockage.

Sawt al Horiya radio station broadcasted again for the first time since 2007, reflecting the spreading joy among Gaza residents, along with the popular and official welcome to the reconciliation and national unity.

The station administration congratulated the Palestinians and considered the agreement one step closer for establishing the Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Palestine TV began its live feed from Gaza Wednesday morning and broadcasted interviews with Palestinians in the streets to monitor their reactions concerning the reconciliation.

The TV crew interviewed Hamas Official, Ismail Radwan, who said that “we have turned the hatred page, and we’re starting a new one”, and assured that all the positive and negative aspects of the division are in the past now.

He affirmed that a special fund, which will be raised by the Arab states, will be set up to compensate those harmed by the division.

Interviews with factions’ leaders, political analysts, and several Hamas members were broadcasted as well.

The Government Information Office in Gaza called on the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank to allow al-Aqsa TV and all banned media to resume their work.

The office also returned the personal camera of Aswar Press Cameraperson, Manal Hasan, after the office confiscated it for twenty days following her cover of demonstrations in Gaza.
