Al Mezan Warns from Escalation of Ariel Attacks on Gaza

August 2, 2010 (WAFA)- Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights strongly condemned, today, the Israeli attacks which killed one Palestinian, injured more than 21 and damaged 30 houses and institutions.

Al Mezan calleds on the international community to intervene and to ensure that civilians and their property are protected in the occupied Palestinian territory. The Center Al Mezan warned from a new Israeli escalation; particularly under the silence of the international community which has only encouraged Israel to violate international law and human rights with impunity.

In the last two days the Israeli occupation forces (IOF) launched a series of aerial attacks throughout the Gaza Strip. A major attack targeted the Presidential Compound, east of Gaza City. Another attack targeted a resistance member in the Middle Gaza district, killing him. The same person had been targeted and lost most family members during Operation Cast Lead. In Rafah, IOF launched two aerial attacks on the tunnels area. No causalities or injuries were reported. Al Mezan Centre for Human Rights condemned these attacks and called on the international community to intervene to prevent an Israeli escalation and ensure protection for the civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

According to Al Mezan's field investigations, at approximately 11:25pm on Friday 30 July 2010, an Israeli jet fighter fired a missile on the helicopter landing area located in the Presidential Compound on the Gaza City beach. As a result, 21 persons were injured and 30 adjacent houses and institutions offices were damaged.

In a separate attack, at approximately 00:10am on Saturday 31 July 2010, an Israeli warplane fired a missile on a privately-owned piece of land. The attack destroyed two rooms in the land completely. The attack caused a very big explosion that left a seven-meter-deep hole in the ground and a destroyed jeep belonging to the Al Batran family. The land is owned by Essa Abdel Hadi Mossa Al Batran, 40, and is located west of the Daban Gas Station on the Salah Ad-Din Street in the An-Nsseirat refugee camp. Al Batran was killed in this attack. On 16 January 2009, the IOF had targeted Al Batran by an aerial attack on his family apartment. This attack killed his wife and five children. Al Batran himself and his little child survived the attack.

At approximately 11:50pm on Friday 30 July 2010, Israeli warplanes filed at least one missile on the Gaza-Egypt border, south of Rafah town. At approximately 3am on Sunday 1 August 2010, an Israeli warplane filed another missile on the Gaza-Egypt border. No causalities or injuries were reported in the two attacks.
