PCBS: 10,791 Operating Vehicles Employing 11,656 Persons

RAMALLAH, June 22, 2010 (WAFA)- The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS) stated that the total number of operating vehicles in the Palestinian Territory reached 10,791 of which 10,285 were for passenger transport and 506 vehicles for freight transport by road.

PCBS released Tuesday the main findings on the Transport Survey- the informal sector 2009 in the Palestinian Territory  (involving land transport for both passengers and goods carried out by vehicles not belonging to permanent economic establishments). Data collection took place during the period 25/1/2010 – 15 /2/2010. The survey results along with the results of the formal transport sector survey 2008, reveal a comprehensive profile for transport activity.

 The main results showed that the total number of operating vehicles reached 10,791 of which  10,285 were for passenger transport and 506 vehicles for freight transport by road. These vehicles were distributed as 73.5% for public vehicles, 21.8% for private vehicles, and 4.7% for freight transport.  Also the results indicated that the number of persons engaged in these vehicles amounted to 11,656 and their compensations reached 16.9 million US $.

The total value of output was $226.2 million distributed as 79.4% for the public vehicles, 17.5% for private vehicles, and 3.1% for freight transport. The intermediate consumption was $120.9 million and value added was $105.3 million.

The survey results showed that the output value increased by 27.4%, the intermediate consumption increased by 33.6%, and the value added increased by 19.9%, during 2009 compared with 2008.  On the other hand, the results showed that the number of employed persons and the compensation for employees increased by 7.5% and 16.9% respectively during 2009 compared with 2008
