UN official says Israeli forces’ exhumation of Palestinian grave in Jenin is “horrifying” and reflects dehumanization of Palestinians

RAMALLAH, May 9, 2026 (WAFA) - Head of UN Human Rights Office for the Occupied Palestinian Territory, Ajith Sunghay, expressed shock after Israeli occupation forces and colonists exhumed the grave of a deceased Palestinian only hours after he was buried in the cemetery of the town of al-‘Asa’asa, south of Jenin.

The head of OHCHR said in a statement published by the office on the X platform, "This is horrifying and embodies the dehumanization of Palestinians that we are witnessing unfold across the entire Occupied Palestinian Territory without anyone being spared, neither the living nor the dead."

Israeli occupation forces on Friday evening compelled residents of al-'Asa'asa village in the Jenin governorate to exhume the body of a deceased relative from his grave, according to local sources.

Sources said that colonists began digging up the grave of a Palestinian man who had been buried earlier in the day in the village cemetery in an attempt to remove his body. Israeli occupation forces later arrived and forced the family to exhume the body and rebury it elsewhere, under the pretext that the cemetery is located near the illegal Tarsala colony.

Last April, Israeli occupation authorities allowed colonists to return to the Tarsala colony, illegally built on lands belonging to the town of Jaba’, after it had been evacuated in 2005.

Since then, colonists and Israeli forces have carried out daily raids into the towns of Jaba’ and Silat al-Dhahr, harassing and terrorizing residents.
