RAMALLAH, April 23, 2010 (WAFA) - “Comprehensive peace in this region must not be just a dream. It must be and it can be a reality”, U.S. Envoy for the Middle East Peace Process Senator George Mitchell told reports Friday evening before meeting President Mahmoud Abbas in the Presidential HQ in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
“I want to thank President Abbas for hosting me today” Mitchell said. “The U.S. share the commitment of President Abbas, Mr. Fayyad and the entire Palestinian leadership in the establishment of viable, independent Palestinian state with contingent territory, in which the Palestinian people can exercise their right of self-determination.”
As president Obama said recently, Mitchell added “the U.S.A. is committed to a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East. That is the settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, that will be solved in two states, Israel and Palestine, in which both the Israeli and Palestinian peoples can live in peace and security, and the realize the cooperation for a better life for their children.”
“President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton asked me to convey personally to President Abbas and to all the Palestinian people their personal commitment to that goal,” he said in his statement.
“The Palestinians are entitled to the freedom and dignity, that comes to the right to determine their future. That is of the best interest of the Palestinian people and the people of Israel and all the peoples in this region. It is also in the interest of the U.S.A.: two states living in peace and security,” he added.
“Comprehensive peace in this region must not be just a dream. It must be and it can be a reality. We want to make this reality soon, not in a distant future. We know that there have been much skepticism and many difficulties, and there will be many difficulties to come. We are determined and persevered until we reach our common goal,” Mitchell concluded.
