EC Celebrates Europe Day, Palestinian European Partnership

RAMALLAH, May 10, 2009 (WAFA)- The European Commission (EC) to the Palestinian National Authority celebrated, Saturday night, Europe Day and the 38th anniversary of the Palestinian-European partnership.

In a reception held, Saturday night, at Ramallah First Group compound, President Mahmoud Abbas said, in a speech pronounced on his behalf by his Advisor for Development and Reconstruction, Marwan Abdul Hamid, that the evolution of the European Union project, which has started as an idea, initiated by Robert Schuman in 1950, suggesting commercial trading between France and Germany after the Second World War, carries safety and stability to European peoples.

Abdul Hamid stated that security and stability in the region is connected to achieving the Palestinian national rights, and establishing the independent Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital.

Abdul Hamid expressed gratitude to “our European friends,” for their economic and political support to the project of the independent Palestinian state. He demanded that the government of Israel commits to peace, and freezes all colonial activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, especial in Jerusalem, calling to lift the siege off the Gaza Strip.

The European Commission Representative, Christian Berger said, “on Europe Day, we celebrate the memories of destruction which the First and Second World Wars left, pointing that this idea has led to peace and stability, and to building a Europe that respects freedom.

Berger hoped that our Arab neighbors enjoy the freedom and stability, pointing to the importance of the 38th anniversary of the Palestinian-European partnership. He stated, “our goal is to see a free independent Palestinian state living in peace with its neighbors.”
