Newspapers Review: Israeli army cracks down on anti-US deal protests in West Bank

RAMALLAH, Saturday, February 22, 2020 (WAFA) – The Israeli army crackdown on protests against the American so-called deal of the century that erupted in various areas of the occupied West Bank were highlighted on the front page of today’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The three papers said dozens of people were injured in the army attacks, most from teargas inhalation but some from rubber-coated metal bullets.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said on this that thousands of Israeli settlers broke into several Palestinian villages in the northern Jordan Valley and provoked the local residents.

Al-Ayyam said on this that the settlers, who were armed and protected by a large Israeli army force, injured one Palestinian in Ras Ein al-Ouja village.

The main front-page story in al-Quds highlighted the Israeli decision to build 1900 housing units in the illegal settlements in the occupied territories while denying Palestinian construction in parts of Area B of the West Bank, which is supposed to be under Palestinian administration.

It also said in another story that as thousands of Muslim worshippers attended the Friday dawn and noon prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem, Israeli forces attacked some of them.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the Israeli police prevented people from giving out sweets to the morning worshippers in Jerusalem and seized the sweets.

Al-Ayyam said the police raided Bab al-Rahma prayer area inside the compound of Al-Aqsa Mosque as Muslim worshippers attempted to hold special prayers at the site on the first anniversary of forcing its reopening for prayer after it was forced closed by the Israeli police for several years.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Mahmoud Abbas inspected the polling stations for the Ramallah Fatah elections and quoted him saying that Fatah is seeking to uplift the capabilities of its members to be able to face all the conspiracies.

It also reported on the meetings and statements that came out against the deal of the century.

Al-Quds said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh inspected the new facilities in Jericho where suspected carriers of the corona virus would be kept for the duration of the quarantine period.

It said that while no corona cases were reported in Palestine, one case was confirmed in Israel.
