Newspaper Review: President Abbas’ speech at emergency Arab meeting focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, February 2, 2020 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Sunday issue on President Mahmoud Abbas’ keynote speech at the emergency meeting of the Arab foreign ministers in Cairo, as he addressed the so-called “deal of the century” peace plan.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that President Abbas reiterated the need to defy the US plan and prevent it from becoming the new terms of reference for negotiations, rejecting it in toto and stressing that there is no place for this deal with all of its terms at the negotiating table.

The papers said that President Abbas revealed that he informed the Israeli and US sides, in two letters, that the Palestinians cut off relations with Israel, including security relations, because they violated international agreements, including those that led to the creation of the state of Israel.

The dailies reported that Abbas and his Egyptian counterpart Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi held a meeting in Cairo on Saturday prior to an Arab League‘s extraordinary session at the level of Arab foreign ministers. During the meeting, el-Sisi affirmed Egypt‘s unwavering stance that supports Palestinian legitimacy under the leadership of President Abbas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam said that the League of Arab States Council at the ministerial level rejected the US-touted Mideast plan, known as the "deal of the century", slamming it as an unjust plan that does not meet the minimum rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people.

The dailies said that eight Palestinians were injured, while dozens others suffered from suffocation due to inhaling tear gas, during clashes with Israeli forces in several areas in the occupied West Bank.

Al-Ayyam said that hundreds of supporters of left-wing organizations marched in Tel Aviv, protesting against the so-called “deal of the century.”
