Newspaper Review: US Congress’ support of two-state solution focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, December 08, 2019 (WAFA) – News about the recent US Congress resolution which supported the two-state solution and rejected the annexation of occupied Palestinian land and the settlement policy made headlines of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida, al-Ayyam and al-Quds said that a number of Palestinian officials as well as US newspapers applauded the resolution, which passed by a majority of 226 votes in favor to 188 against.

Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat, hailed the resolution, describing it a “blow” to US President Donald Trump’s attempts to legitimize the illegal Israeli settlements, as reported in al-Ayyam.

The dailies also reported that the Presidency applauded the resolution, considering it as “a response to the current wrong policy of the American administration,” the most recent of which was statement by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which he said that settlements are not inconsistent with international law.

The papers also said that multiple US newspapers said that the US considered the resolution as a “rebuke” to Trump.

The dailies reported that President Mahmoud Abbas received at his office in the occupied West Bank city of Ramallah, the newly appointed Chinese envoy for the Middle East peace process, Zhai Juan, and discussed with him the latest developments on the situation in Palestine.

The President briefed the Chinese envoy on the ongoing preparations for holding the presidential and legislative elections in Palestine, in addition to Israel’s continued violations of the agreements signed with the Palestinians through its settlement building policy and the daily detention campaigns of Palestinian civilians.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Palestinians in Hebron, south of the West Bank, will observe a one-day general strike in protest against the new Israeli settlement measures, most notably the recent Israeli decision to establish new outposts in the city.

The papers said that The Guardian, a UK newspaper, reported that there have been several far-right Israeli online campaigns that aim to spread hatred of Islam on Facebook through a number of English-speaking pages.

The dailies said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called on Israelis on vote directly and choose between him and Benny Gantz to elect the next prime minister.
