Newspapers Review: One Palestinian killed by Israel, another dies of wounds

RAMALLAH, Saturday, November 30, 2019 (WAFA) – Two Palestinians died yesterday in Gaza from Israeli army gunfire, one, a 16 years old boy shot and killed yesterday at the border with Israel, and the second, a 30 years old man who died of injuries sustained when Israeli warplanes fired a missile at a motorcycle in Gaza on the 13th of this month, reported the three Palestinian Arabic dailies today on their front page.

They also reported on the weekly protests in the occupied West Bank against settlements, which are often repressed by the Israeli army, and Israeli settlers’ attacks against Palestinian civilians and vandalism of their property, as was the case in Taybeh and Deir Ammar villages in the Ramallah area.

The papers also highlighted remarks by President Mahmoud Abbas on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People in which he said, as came in the main front-page headline of al-Hayat al-Jadida daily, that “we will not accept oppression and injustice and we will continue the struggle against the occupation.” The other two dailies, al-Quds and al-Ayyam, highlighted in the headlines the same remarks, which were reported by WAFA.

Al-Quds highlighted on its front page the Israeli District Court’s ruling in Jerusalem cancelling a deal for selling property owned by the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate in Jerusalem’s Old City to Jewish settler groups. The property is the Imperial and Petra hotels in Jaffa Gate. This was also highlighted on the front page of al-Ayyam.

Al-Quds also reported on an Israeli plan to build more than 1000 housing units in the illegal settlement of Pisgat Zeev in occupied East Jerusalem and plans to build a new settlement on land near the former Jerusalem airport between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Al-Ayyam said a piece of the crib of Jesus Christ was on display in Jerusalem yesterday before moving it to Bethlehem’s Nativity Church.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini saying settlements undermine the two-state solution.

It also quoted Saeb Erekat, a senior Palestinian official, saying that the two-state solution was a painful Palestinian concession for peace.

It also said the “dubious” American hospital intended to be built in northern Gaza was rejected by the factions and welcomed by Hamas.

The paper also said the head of the official Palestinian media, Ahmad Assaf, signed an agreement for broadcasting Christmas celebrations from Bethlehem.

The three papers reported as well on the political developments in Israel, the situation in Iraq and Sudan, and the stabbings in London and The Hague.
