RAMALLAH, Wednesday, November 13, 2019 (WAFA) – Palestinians protesting outside the United Nations office in Ramallah demanded renewal of the mandate for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which comes up for a vote this month.
The protesters raised the Palestinian and UN flags and called for immediate action to block efforts by the United States and Israel aimed at ending the mandate of the humanitarian refugee agency.
“We call on the international community and the UN to vote in favor of renewing UNRWA mandate,” said Mohammad Illian, head of the Committee for the Defense of the Right of Return.
He said life in the Palestinian refugee camps is very difficult and therefore UNRWA’s presence is important to provide the refugees with their health, education and social needs.
UNRWA was established by a UN resolution in 1950 to care after 700,000 Palestinians who became refugees after Israel was created on their land and in their homes and who now number over five million.
