Newspapers Review: Abbas-Trump summit focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, May 4, 2017 (WAFA) – The summit talks between President Mahmoud Abbas and his US counterpart Donald Trump in Washington was the highlight of the Thursday issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

The three dailies highlighted statements by both leaders, particularly those related to peace making, and printed pictures of Abbas and Trump at the press conference, as appeared in al-Hayat al-Jadida, sitting together as came in al-Ayyam, as well as a picture of the two delegations at the meeting table, as printed in al-Quds.

The hunger strike of more than 1500 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails was also highlighted on the front page of the dailies, particularly the rally held in Ramallah in support of the prisoners.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Hamas did not allow people in Gaza to participate in a rally organized by Fatah in support of the prisoners. They said the Israeli High Court said lawyers should be allowed to visit striking prisoners.

Al-Quds said the Israeli High Court ordered the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the railway company to return privately-owned land to its original Palestinian owners.

It also quoted the head of Gaza fishermen as saying Israeli talk about expanding the fishing area  to nine nautical miles is nothing more than media stunt.

It said Palestinian hospitals in East Jerusalem may shut down if the Palestinian Authority does not pay overdue debt owed to the hospitals for patients transferred there for treatment.
