Newspapers review: President’s remarks in Fatah’s meeting focus of dailies

 

RAMALLAH, Friday, July 12, 2019 (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas’ remarks during a Fatah Advisory Council’s meeting in Ramallah dominated the front page headlines in Friday’s issue of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Abbas was reported in al-Quds reiterating his rejection to the US-touted Mideast plan, dubbed deal of the century.

He was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida stressing that the so-called ‘deal of the century’ would fail just as the economic workshop in Bahrain’s capital, Manama, failed.

Additionally, the dailies said that a Palestinian succumbed to his wounds sustained from Israeli gunfire to the east of Beit Hnoun town in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds described the slain Palestinian as a member of the Hamas’ armed wing, while al-Ayyam identified him as field control officer.

Mahmoud al-Adham, 28, succumbed to his wounds after being shot and critically injured by Israeli military gunfire in the northern Gaza Strip.

The dailies said that Israeli forces removed a tent that was erected by Palestinians protesting Israel’s decision to demolish 100 apartments in Wadi al-Hummus area, on the edge of Sur Baher, in the southeast of Jerusalem.

Al-Ayyam elaborated that Israeli forces cracked on Palestinian protestors, causing dozens to suffer from tear gas inhalation.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that two Palestinians were injured by Israeli military gunfire in Duheisha refugee camp, south of Bethlehem.

According to al-Quds, Israeli forces delivered a demolition notice for a Palestinian house in Idhna town, west of Hebron city.

It added that 98 Israeli settlers and intelligence officers forced their way into East Jerusalem’s flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound.

Al-Ayyam said that Israeli forces rounded up 17 Palestinians in multiple raids across the West Bank. Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the detainees totaled 15.

Presidential spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh was reported in the dailies expressing the Palestinian leadership’s readiness to resume talks with Washington if the latter agrees to abide by international peace references.

Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu was reported in al-Quds and al-Ayyam threatening to launch a “broad” and “surprising” onslaught against Gaza.

Al-Quds said that Israel is expelling international academics visiting Palestinian universities in the West Bank.

According to al-Ayyam, seven Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails are on a hunger strike in protest of administrative detention.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that the Egyptian security delegation held meetings with Fatah officials, including members of Fatah Central Committee and General Intelligence Chief Majed Faraj, in Ramallah.

Premier Mohammad Shyatteh was reported stating: “We will not deal with the Israeli divisions of the Palestinian territories.”

Al-Ayyam said that Jerusalem churches held a rally in protest of Israel’s confiscation of church property in the Christian Quarter.

Regionally, al-Quds highlighted the Associated Press report titled Trump gives warm welcome to Qatar amid Persian Gulf disputes.

Internationally, al-Quds reported US congresswoman Rashida Tlaib blasting the Foreign Affairs Committee’s anti-BDS bill as “unconstitutional”.
